China Strengthens Its Global Lead with 247 Unicorn Startups in 2025
Beijing, May 16, 2025 – China continues to solidify its position as a global innovation leader, now home to 247 unicorns — startups valued at USD 1 billion or more. With a vast ecosystem of over 99,800 startups, China remains at the forefront of disruptive and high-growth entrepreneurship.
The most recent addition to the unicorn club is Insilico, which reached unicorn status on March 13, 2025. As of May 12, one new unicorn has emerged this year.
Beijing leads among Chinese cities with 74 unicorns, followed by Shanghai with 43, and Haidian with 19. These cities serve as major innovation hubs, fostering cutting-edge developments across a range of industries.
In terms of sectors, the Consumer segment tops the list with 121 unicorns, followed by High Tech (61) and Enterprise Applications (60) — highlighting the diversity and strength of China’s startup ecosystem.
With a strong foundation and sustained momentum, China continues to shape the future of global entrepreneurship and innovation.
